Bextra News - January 29, 2005 - Kaiser Bans Bextra

Kaiser Permanente, one of the largest managed health care organizations in the United States, banned the use of Bextra due to tests that indicated it may heighten the risk of heart attacks and strokes.

Kaiser will continue using Celebrex, another Cox-2 inhibitor by Pfizer.

In September, Merck voluntarily withdrew Vioxx from the market when a clinical trial showed it doubled the risk of heart attacks and strokes in patients.

On Friday Merck said the US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) was launching an informal inquiry concerning the way the company handled issues related to Vioxx.

Since Vioxx was withdrawn from the market, hundreds of class action law suits have been launched against Merck for damages caused to patients from taking the painkiller.

A recent study published in the medical journal The Lancet indicated Vioxx may have caused 140,000 excess cases of serious heart disease and deaths in the United States.
