Propulsid was developed to treat
gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). GERD is the abnormal
backflow (reflux) of stomach acids into the esophagus, the tube that
leads from the throat to the stomach. This backflow occurs because
the valve between the lower end of the esophagus and the stomach
(the lower esophageal sphincter) does not close tightly enough. The
main symptom of GERD is frequent heartburn, a term used to describe
gastrointestinal pain. Propuslid, touted by its manufacturer for
treatment of stomach disorders, was removed from the market because
of many cardiac side effects and deaths.
Propulsid may cause irregular heartbeats
and even sudden death. At least 341 reports of heart-rhythm
abnormalities, including 80 reports of deaths, have been associated
with Propulsid. Although the
FDA first warned that Propulsid can
cause serious heart problems in June 1998, reports of deaths and
hospitalizations have continued to mount. Propulsid can cause
serious side effects such as sudden cardiac death, heart attack,
irregular heartbeat, QT interval prolongation. If you have taken
Propulsid and suffer any of these side effects, contact your lawyer,
as you might have a claim against the manufacturer.
