Merck to Appeal
Verdict in Texas VIOXX® Product Liability Case - WHITEHOUSE
STATION, N.J., Aug. 19, 2005 - Merck & Co., Inc. is disappointed a
state court jury in Brazoria County, Texas, returned a verdict in
favor of the plaintiff in the VIOXX® product liability lawsuit Ernst
v. Merck. Merck will appeal the verdict.

Conflicts - Feb. 28 -- The US Food and Drug
Administration (FDA) said it screened doctors and scientists for
conflicts of interest when the agency named a committee to rule on
the safety of pain drugs made by Merck & Co and Pfizer Inc.

- Medical experts now believe up to 160,000 people
suffer Vioxx damage. With thousands of cases expected & multiple
government probes underway, one analyst estimates Merck could face
legal damages totaling over $50 billion.
A
US Food and Drug Administration study examining the
incidence of coronary heart disease in patients taking Vioxx has
finally been published in the British medical journal The Lancet.

Lead author, Dr. David Graham, who works in the FDA's office of drug
safety, found that Vioxx could have caused up to 140,000 cases of
heart disease in the US. Graham indicated many of these cases could
have been fatal.
